Our research focuses on the evolution of molecular level responses of aquatic animals to the environment pollution
Main directions of the investigations:
- The evolution of molecular systems of stress defense in freshwater animals
- Comparative study of metallothioneins in the invertebrate and low vertebrate animals;
- Oxidative stress response in the invertebrate and low vertebrate animals;
- Biomarkers of the environmental pollution;
- Mathematic modeling of the biological response on the impact of pollution
- The effect of the environmental pollution on the molecular detoxication systems in the aquatic animals under the laboratory and field conditions
- The active biochemical monitoring of the surface water state

Assays Conducted by the team:
• The concentration of metallothioneins, metal buffering and stress proteins, their size-exclusion and ion-exchange chromatography, analysis of metal composition and domain structure;
• Oxidative stress response: activity of superoxide dismutase (Cu,Zn-SOD and Mn-SOD), catalase, glutathione levels (GSH and GSSG), lipid peroxidation measured as thiobarbituric acid reacting substance (TBARS) production; protein carbonyls; total oxyradical production;
• Genotoxicity: micronuclei and nuclear abnormalities, DNA strand-breaks (alkaline unwinding assay);
• The biotransformation system by the ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) and glutathione-S-transferase activity,
• Other biomarkers: lysosomal membrane stability (cytotoxicity), cholinesterase activity (neurotoxicity), vitellogenin level (endocrine disruption), lactate dehydrogenase activity, lactate and pyruvate levels, caspase-3 activity (marker of apoptosis);
• Routine water chemical analysis, manganate oxydizability, pH, hardness, nitrites, nitrates, amonium, phosphates, phenols, metals (Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Cd, Pb);
• Statistical approaches: A Two-way Factorial Anova, Discriminant Functional and Multiple Regression analyses, Principal component analysis (PCA).
